The 2008 Mason Dixon Membership meeting and Awards Banquet will be held Saturday Nov 1st at Art Glatfelter's farm, Fieldstone Meadows, in Dallastown PA. We will also be incorporating a Youth Clinic into the weekend.

The meeting is open to all Paso Fino enthusiasts regardless of your membership status in the PFHA or Mason Dixon Region. The meeting will begin at followed by the banquet.

The banquet is free to all current due paying members of Mason Dixon PFHA. There is a $30.00 fee for non-members which will include a one year membership to the Mason Dixon region for the year 2008-2009. The Banquet is a Pot Luck with the main course of buffalo burgers and hot dogs being provided and attendees bringing their favorite side dish or dessert. Soft drinks, coffee, hot cocoa and bottled water will also be provided.  It may end up being a Dinner in the Dirt if enough people attend and we need to set up tables in the indoor arena, so please wear appropriate footwear. The barn and arena are NOT heated so check the weather and dress accordingly. We need to get a head count ASAP to arrange for the tables and chairs. Please contact Lisa Gorsuch at 410-596-5586 or middlefieldfarm@verizon.net by October 25th.

Following the meeting and meal, year-end awards will be announced, and then there will be a "Fun Night" mainly for the Youth, but adults are encouraged to hang around and enjoy the fun too! There will be a costume contest and then games on horseback including everyone's favorite, soccer and one special “surprise game”.

Sunday will be the Youth Clinic (free to all Mason Dixon Youth Members) which will focus on basic horsemanship and with any problem areas each rider is having with their horses. Lunch will be a Pizza Party and the clinic will end sometime around .

The set up for the clinic will basically be the same as last year-bring your own horse and tack (PA requires a health certificate for out of state horses but Fieldstone does not. Coggins is required by both PA and Fieldstone. Consider booster shots for communicable disease -Ask your vet if you have any questions)  You provide the bedding - sawdust, shavings ,pellets or straw are all acceptable,(no cost for stalls which are 10 x10 matted with automatic water bowls) feed bucket, feed and hay. If you do not have a horse we will do our best to provide you with one. A parent or guardian for the youth rider must be present for the clinic. Helmets and appropriate foot wear are required. (No sneakers please). Contact Nola Haupert Keill no later than October 25th at rono@socantel.net with your RSVP for the clinic, if you need a horse to ride, and any special requests or problems you want to work on while at the clinic.

California Laminitis Seminar First of it's Kind

The first Laminitis West Seminar will be held on November 1, 2008, at the Monterey Convention Center in Monterey, CA. Presenters for the one-day seminar are James A. Orsini, DVM, Dipl. ACVS, of the University of Pennsylvania; Thomas J. Divers, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM, Dipl. ACVECC of Cornell University; and Patrick Reilly, farrier, of the University of Pennsylvania.

This seminar is an outgrowth of the International Equine Conference on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot (ILC), which is held in West Palm Beach, FL, every other year. The fifth conference will be held next year on November 6-8, 2009. The ILC, in partnership with Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic and Dr. Tim Eastman and Dr. Nora Grenager, will present the one-day Laminitis West Seminar in California. Dr. Eastman is the Director of the Laminitis West Seminar, working in conjunction with Dr. Orsini, the Director of the International Equine Conference on Laminitis.

"The inaugural seminar on November 1, partnering with Steinbeck Country Equine Clinic, is yet another way to share the latest clinical and research information on laminitis and diseases of the foot," said Dr. Orsini. "This new knowledge will translate into improved clinical care for the horse as we take aim to 'Conquer Laminitis!'"

The plan for the Laminitis West Seminar on November 1, 2008, in California is to bring the latest information on laminitis, including diagnostic techniques, prevention, treatment, and pain management, to veterinarians and farriers on the West Coast. The presenting faculty will share case studies, with time after each presentation for discussion on related or other topics. The program topics scheduled range from the 'big picture' view of the disease, laminitis and systemic inflammatory disease to mechanical considerations and the dilemma farriers and veterinarians face in managing these challenging patients.

The Laminitis West Seminar has been approved by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards—Registry of Approved Continuing Education (AAVSB-RACE) to provide 8.5 hours of continuing education credits.

Space at the November 1 seminar is limited to 150 attendees. Veterinarians and Farriers may register for the Laminitis West Seminar online at
www.steinbeckequine.com/laminitisconference.shtml. Veterinarians and farriers who register together can take advantage of a combination discount. The registration fee for the Laminitis West Seminar includes seminar materials, proceedings from the 4th ILC, break, luncheon, and cocktail reception.
